Friday, rain….. lots of the stuff. I was cursing myself for not bringing a more heavy duty waterproof as I dripped and squelched my way back to the minibus. Once reunited with the place of dry and warmth I found myself driving back down to Kinlochewe to walk into camp site number 2.

I thought assessing 3 groups was going to be a bit of a mission to say the least but little did I realise that my weekend was just about to get alot tougher. As I approached camp 2 I found myself thinking that they would all be tucked up in bed already having had dinner. That is not what I found however, Reuben (the local countryside ranger) quickly brought me up to date and told me that one of our group had gone over on her ankle and the mountain rescue had been informed. Right…. I thought it’s going to be a long night. Luckily we were only 4 km from the car park. The downside, it was 4km of tree roots, slippery rock, mud and very steep sided paths. Not easy to take a big mountain rescue stretcher down that sort of terrain. I was right, the team themselves suffered 2 twisted ankles on the way out, movement was slow and we eventually got to the car park at about 01:45. It was about 03:00 by the time I got back to the tent. I was right I told myself as a crashed into my tent, it was a long night.

Lucky the weather improved on saturday and continued to improve through sunday. Ullapool High School did themselves proud as always. The students were keen, organised and driven. Keeping up a much higher D of E pace than the average. I was pleased to passed them all and give them good reviews.

Thanks to Torridon and Kinlochewe mountain rescue.
